"The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor."
- Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith

Scrivener is a powerful content-generation tool for writers designed for composing and structuring long and difficult documents. While it gives you complete control of the formatting, its focus is on getting you to the end of that awkward first draft.

Compose your text in any order and in pieces as large or small as you like. View the components of your draft individually or as a whole. Import and refer to research files such as images and PDFs alongside your writing.

Whether you prefer to outline first, hammer out your first draft and restructure later, or do a bit of both, Scrivener's corkboard and outliner tools are completely integrated with the text, so working with an overview of your draft is just a click away.

Scrivener's users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won't presume to tell you how to write - it just provides an array of flexible tools that allow you to do things your way, no matter what kind of writing you do.

“Scrivener
  • At the time of writing, this application has the incredible rating of 100% 5-stars from users. That might be your first hint that this is something special.
  • My first inkling that Scrivener was ‘made of awesome’, was when I heard tech journalist Andy Ihnatko waxing lyrical about it, on a podcast.
  • Very feature deep and customisable app.

Scrivener is a powerful content generation tool that allows you to compose and structure long (and longish) articles. It’s too simplistic to view this as a word processor; it’s like a writing studio, with a phenomenal depth and breadth of functionality. It includes a tremendous amount of useful tools, in _one_ application.

Scrivener is a
  • Ring Binder
  • A corkboard
  • An outliner
  • A text editor
.. all rolled into one.

Any project that requires collecting research notes, ordering and sorting ideas, shuffling index cards, producing edited texts, will benefit from the rich functionality of Scrivener. You don’t have to use all of features, just use the ones that you need.

There is a slight learning curve, but it’s most definitely worth investing a little time (i.e. 35 minutes) watching a video tutorial showing you every feature that you, as a writer, could possibly dream of. In the ‘writer’ description I include: journalists, people doing coursework for school or uni. I can’t imagine a more perfect solution. (I wish I had this when I ‘were a lad’, kids these days don’t know how good they’ve got it)
